Skills That Thrill February Newsletter

Hi Gang

I’m sure you're all busy and excited about the playoffs. We had a chance to watch some games and unfortunately  there can only be one winner. We wanted to let you know that we have another domain name that will allow you to get to this web site. The site link is http://www.skillsthatthrill.com. This is our Company name as well. When issuing cheques to us for future clinics please make them out to Skills That Thrill.

Our plan is to bring you the best instructors and instruction to the area. As are students improve we here at Skills That Thrill strive to improve.  Thank you for your continued support.

We would like to thank all the teams that we train for allowing us to work with them. Also we wish you the best this playoff season. Skills That Thrill is honored to say that this is some of the most exciting hockey we have seen in a while. We have seen several of our students games and we look forward to seeing more.

We  intend on going to more games until the season is over. If you can email us game times and the arena that you play at we will do our best to attend. We are proud of all the Skills That Thrill athletes, students, and teams that we have been working with over the years. Best of luck hope to see you there

Some Past News

Summer Need 4 Speed Winner

In the summer 2005 we held an 8 session skating program designed to increase your speed. The students were timed in the 1st session. We put the players thru 6 skating sessions and timed them on the last session as well.  The student with the best percent increase in time from the 1st to the last session won a brand new one piece hockey stick.

We would like to congratulate Greg Koestler  in winning the NEED For Speed session. Greg had the highest increase in speed from the first session to the final session. Jimmy shown in the above picture gives Greg his one piece stick for winning.

We believe this did not happen by accident. Greg was very focused and worked to the best of his ability.  Greg plays on the South Point Bantam team and has been working with Skills That Thrill for about a year now.  His hard work, and focus is paying off.

He has recently played a couple of games as an AP (Alternate Player) with the Sun county AAA team

Once again Greg congratulations on your success.

In addition to Greg's achievements we have another student Kyle Quick who attended the 2005 summer skating clinic and avid Breakfast Club Clinic. Kyle plays for the South Point Minor Pewee Travel Team and is working very hard as well. Kyle stays focused and is  very attentive when he works with us on improving his game. Kyle has also been asked to play as an alternative player with the Sun County AAA Minor PEE WEE's.

Monthly Tip

What to do with the puck?

In the games that we have attended we have seen plenty of players skating up to the puck and slapping it away when no one is near them.  We can call this many things “hope for the best hockey’ - “slap hockey” - “If I don’t have the puck I can’t get in trouble hockey” or “I don’t want it  you take it hockey” You get the point.  The puck is usually slapped where no one is, or to the other team. This is not what we want you to do.

When you skate up to a puck you have 2 choices.

CARRY THE PUCK until someone takes it away, or make a PLAY WITH THE PUCK. It could be as simple as, passing to teammate, skating to the red line and dumping it  in, or shooting. If a player keeps this in his memory bank and keeps it readily available  for recall in any given situation the chances of making a bad play are almost impossible and rare.

We believe there are bad CHOICES made in those situations so keep the choice list short.

You have 2 choices

  • Carry until some one takes the puck away

  •  OR make a play

You can make a play by doing the following and advanced players can add to list of plays. The more advanced you become the more you will be able to start anticipating or seeing 2, 3 or 4 plays ahead or in advance.

  • Pass to teammate

  • Skate to the red line and dump it in

  • OR shoot

Now the only variable is making a PLAY or the above.  The more advanced you become the more you will be able to start anticipating or seeing 2, 3 or 4 plays ahead or in advance.

This is a short list of choices , and not much to think about and that is what we all want, our students and players DOING better. In no way are we suggesting that you be a puck hog. When you hog the puck, you now have to beat 9 players on the ice to get a goal. For example look at all the best players they do not hog the puck they make the proper choice and plays every time. Want to learn more about this then get into our Forward and Defensive clinics coming this month. For now study this chart below on a regular basis and begin to understand what to do with the puck.

Hope this helps

Follow the chart below for extra help with your game and no more “hope for the best hockey’ - “slap hockey” - “If I don’t have the puck I can’t get in trouble hockey” or “I don’t want it  you take it hockey”

Please print a copy for yourself. If you don't have Acrobat Reader you may download it free right here. Approaching the puck chart

Until Next Time
